GlobalRadZambia (GRadZ)

GlobalRadZambia (GRadZ) is an initiative founded by Dr. Jill Wruble, in consultation with Zambian physicians, to strengthen and sustain the Specialty Training Program in Radiology (STP-Radiology) at the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka, Zambia. Since its launch in 2021, GRadZ has trained 12 radiology residents (called “registrars”), more than doubling the number of radiologists serving Zambia, a nation of 19 million people—from just 10 to 20. The program is rapidly expanding, with two registrars set to graduate in spring 2025 and nine new first-year residents beginning in March 2025. For the first time, the incoming class includes trainees from across Africa, extending GRadZ’s reach beyond Zambia’s borders and building a network of radiology leaders for the region.

Online Teaching Program

GRadZ’s online teaching program connects registrars in Lusaka with live, interactive teaching delivered by more than two dozen American and international radiologists. Interactive Zoom conferences—held 3–4 afternoons each week—create a vibrant academic community across continents. The curriculum began with musculoskeletal and breast imaging and has since expanded to include body, chest, neuroradiology, pediatrics, ultrasound, interventional radiology, and nuclear medicine. To prepare senior trainees for leadership, GRadZ also offers sessions on policy, professional society development, and departmental management, all tailored to local values and resources. African-born radiologists practicing in the U.S. have added a unique perspective, sharing experiences of supporting imaging in their home countries and fostering opportunities for regional collaboration.

On-Site Clinical Teaching

In September 2025, GRadZ launched its first on-site clinical teaching initiative, marking a new chapter in hands-on training. The program includes a Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) initiative (described further under POCUS) and a Visiting Professorship program, designed to bring world-class expertise directly to Lusaka. Looking ahead, GRadZ aims to expand opportunities even further through international observerships that will give registrars immersive, real-world experiences and promote global exchange.

Impact

Through interactive teaching, mentorship, and community building—and through an enduring appreciation for the breadth, impact, and wonder of radiology—GRadZ is equipping and inspiring the next generation of Zambian and African radiologists. By strengthening local expertise and fostering international collaboration, GRadZ is helping to transform access to imaging and elevate the standard of care across the region.
